An opportunity has arisen in our Dog Care and Welfare department, as a Dog Care and Welfare Assistant covering Relief hours (min. 32 hours per month ) at our National Headquarters and Training Centre, Cork. Role description. The purpose of the role is to provide specialist care and support to all dogs under the care of Kennels at Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Main responsibilities include but are not limited to: To carry out day to day husbandry of up to 30 dogs within a block of kennels, ensuring application of standard operating procedures (SOPs). This will include the provision of specialist health care of the dogs in your charge and maintaining appropriate levels of hygiene. Monitor and maintain the mental and physical wellbeing of the dogs within the kennel environment, to ensure all dogs are fit and healthy supporting their progression through their training. Identify and resolve potential welfare issues. Responsible for educating and maintaining behavioural responses within the kennel environment using appropriate dog handling techniques and being aware of individual temperaments and behavioural traits. Identifying and referring potential handling or behavioural issues as appropriate. To monitor and mentor new staff and volunteers to ensure consistency of application of SOPs. Maintain accurate and up to date records by providing verbal and written/electronic information regarding health histories and the behaviour of dogs. Working as part of the team to deliver joint objectives. Essential Criteria: Ability to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays as required. Garda Vetting Clearance. Full clean Category B ( vehicles ) drivers licence. Previous experience/ knowledge in working with animals. Skills: Strong communication capability. Excellent interpersonal skills.
